I filed and extension and I need to complete my 2023 taxes. We were affected by Hurricane Helene and now that I'm trying to complete this I cannot see the extension. How?

When I sign in to turbotax it's only letting me start taxes for 2024. I need to complete 2023 so I can get FAFSAs completed.

You will be able to access the 2023 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Start a 2024  return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2023 returns is now permanently closed.

Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2023 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Mon-Fri

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

The automated system is completely idiotic and useless. COMPLETELY. Just a circle of questions and never gets to any resolution and never get someone on the phone. Any other suggestions?

No other suggestions.   E-filing and online preparation is closed for 2023 returns, so the only way you can finish preparing that 2023 return is by using the desktop download.  If you started a return online and want to use that one, you will need to be tenacious enough go through customer support to get the download software.

Or...if you did not even start the 2023 return or did not get very far in entering your data, maybe you would prefer to just purchase and download the software yourself without involving customer support and then start the return over.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

After going in circles with the automated system for nearly 10 minutes I was finally able to get a rep on the phone. That system is terrible. Is there some way to complain to someone that might actually care that a customer service tool is serving customers poorly?

I have already paid for TT online, with state, and filed an extension earlier this year.

Ten whole minutes?   You are complaining to a lady who has just spent the last two hours on hold with healthcare.gov.     (while answering questions on this site)

If they provided you with a download for the desktop software you should be good to move forward and get your return finished and printed to mail in.

And...the IRS link in your post does indeed state that you have extra time to file your tax return.   But it has to be filed by mail.   You have more time, but e-filing was not extended.   You will have to print, sign and mail the return.
