If you received self-employed income for less $600, you will not receive a form 1099-NEC. But you have to report this income on your tax return. You do not enter this income as a form 1099-NEC so you do need the payer's Federal EIN.

You report the income you received in cash, checks or bank transfers or without a 1099-NEC as self-employed income under Other self-employed income.

  • In business income, just under Type of Income, click on Add Income for this work
  • On the next page, click on the radio button next to Other Self-employed Income
  • Click Continue to enter your income received in cash, checks or bank transfers.

Thank you for your help.

This is what I have been doing, but at the end it still asks for the EIN I have double checked a couple times now.

Return to the business. Edit. Income Edit. The screen gives options. Select Other Income. Enter description of cash and the amount. Click continue. There is no EIN entry.

The program will be able to calculate the SE tax, if any from there.  Self Employment tax (Scheduled SE) is automatically generated if a person has $400 or more of net profit from self-employment.  You pay 15.3% SE tax on 92.35% of your Net Profit greater than $400.  The 15.3% self employed SE Tax is to pay both the employer part and employee part of Social Security and Medicare.  So you get social security credit for it when you retire.

Other income still asks for Payers EIN at the end and NEEDS REVIEW.

You may need to delete the 1099 if you started one.   The business section ''Other Income'' doesn't require an EIN.   You may have started an entry in the Other Common Income section, which does require an EIN.   Follow the steps below to enter all self-employment income (with a 1099 and without)

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Navigate to the Schedule C section:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to Schedule C.
    • TurboTax Desktop: Search for Schedule C and select the Jump to link.
  3. Answer Yes on the Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? screen.
    • If you land on the Your 2024 self-employed work summary page, select Review next to the work you're adding income for.
  4. Answer the questions on the following screens until you arrive at Let's enter the income for your work.
  5. Select Other self-employed income and select Continue.
  6. On the next page you can enter any cash, personal checks, credit card payments, or cryptocurrency (Form 1099-K) related to your self-employment.

Ignore the needs review message; it won't prevent e-filing.   Your self-employment is entered in the right place on the screen image above.   Scroll done and click on Continue to answer the rest of the business interview questions.

I already answered all questions. I'm going to submit with leaving the EIN blank. TurboTax keeps asking NEEDS REVIEW but I'm going to ignore it. Thanks for all your help!

I am using turbo tax deluxe on desktop. The schedule C interview is asking question about business. There is no self employment check box.

I don't have a business. I just did some freelancing work for $200. Any help how to enter it?

Doing freelance work is the same as having a business.  You would use your address as the address for the business and your name for the name of the business.  The NAICS code would be the code for line of freelance work you are doing.

Basically, answer the questions as they apply to you.
