I couldn't afford health insurance for a good portion of 2024. It is asking me for an Exemption Certificate Number, that I don't have. What now?

My employment was terminated in March of 2024 in California. In early April 2024 I moved to Kentucky and had no income for the rest of the year, so could not afford any health insurance plan.

Is this being asked on your CA return?  KY does not have an insurance mandate.  If you are filing your CA taxes and are asked for an exemption certificate, be sure you go back through your CA return and select that you were a part year resident and then enter the dates you were a resident.  Then when asked if you had health insurance for the year, say yes, as you were covered for the part of the year that you were a CA resident.

CA will not penalize you for not having insurance while a KY resident.
