I am married filing jointly in California. I want to use the federal deduction but itemize for state but I don't know how to change it

I think I know the answer -- this is what I did:  I entered all of my deductions on the federal return.  They weren't used for my federal return because the standard deduction was higher.  But everything transferred thru to my state return.
Note:  It even let me enter the unreimbursed job related expenses in the federal return even though that deduction was eliminated for federal taxes beginning with 2018.
