Use the address where he currently is at the time of filing, if that is the prison then enter the prisons address.

Once you have started a return for him here are some steps to help you navigate to where you would enter his information for the work release part.

Inmate Earnings:

  • Click Federal Taxes
  • Click Wages & Income
  • Click Edit next to your W-2 information
  • Make sure all W-2 information is correct
  • Click Continue
  • Click Continue on the next screen
  • On the page about uncommon situations uncheck Inmate or Halfway House

So if they made the money at work release, but is no longer on work release, is that when we uncheck the inmate or halfway house?

If you already mailed the tax return don't also e-file it.

If you want to e-file instead of mailing the tax return you can do that as long as you have not already mailed in your tax return and you qualify to e-file. Please follow these steps in this TurboTax FAQHow do I change from mail to e-file in TurboTax Online?

A friend was incarcerated when he filed his taxes, he has been released since. How can he change the address on his tax return so the refund doesn't go to the prison but to his current address.
