The meaning of the figures you see may depend on which screen you are viewing. For example, there is a screen that combines Federal and State results so that you see the net result, even though the returns are separate. Also, it's possible that your total Federal tax liability, for example, is $1,388 but you have a net refund of $595 after withholding and other payments are applied

 

You can preview your return before filing to find out how your taxes were calculated and whether there is a refund or balance due. See here for details.

YEah. it certainly depends on what exact page you are looking at.

 

But I'd bet you are getting a  793 state refund

....and owe the Feds $1388

You should look at yoru printed copies of each form set to clarify the exact amounts.

 

AND...the State refund is NOT going to be sent to the Feds...you would have to pay the 1388 to the IRS separately.....if that's what is showing on your form 1040
