If you claim your son as a dependent on your return, then the IRS believes you are also responsible for his insurance. Whoever claims a person that is getting insurance through the Marketplace, must include the 1095-A for that person on their return.
The Advanced premium tax credit was based on his income, but if you are responsible for him financially, then it is based on your income. This means, if you earned more than he did or you are not eligible for the entire credit he received, then you would have to pay it back.
You can choose not to claim him as a dependent on your return if it causes you to own instead of getting a refund.
