I am 17 and I got my first w-2 form & will file my own income tax, can my mom still claim me as a dependent on her income tax?

What?  The rule for under age 19 is that the dependent did not provide more than half of his/.her OWN support. And emancipation is not relevant to the poster's situation.

I still live my mom. and she is a single parent.

Macuser is correct.

So in short, yes my mom can claim me as a dependent because i am still a minor, not earning more than 50%?

@macuser-22  Thanks!  I know. I have been trying to keep my answers to a teenager filing a first return short and sweet.  I think some of the "information" being thrown at the OP is very confusing and overwhelming.

And whoever @nicholas.smeelie  is, he/she does not know squat about tax law.   Total disregard those comments. they have no basis in tax law.

@brya814295 Your mom will not be in trouble but she is likely to be annoyed.

If you can be claimed as a dependent and you answer the question in My Info incorrectly, here is what happens if you e-file first:

Your Social Security number goes into the IRS system as having been used.  When your parents try to e-file, their e-file is rejected and they will find it impossible to e-file their own tax return.  Then they will have to print, sign and mail their return and wait for months for it to be processed.

You, meanwhile, will have to file an amended tax return on a special form called a 1040X, which also takes months for the IRS to process.  So make sure you know the correct answer to "Can anyone claim you as a dependent on their tax return?"

If you already e-filed and your tax return was accepted, you have to wait for it to be fully processed and then amend it to change the way you answered that question about whether you can be claimed as someone else's dependent.

And.....look at your tax return.   If you had $1400 on line 30 and got a big refund you are going to have to pay that $1400 back when you amend......so do not spend it.  Dependents are not eligible to get that stimulus money.

What you did happens a lot when students and teenagers prepare their first tax returns without understanding that "dependent" question.    It causes a problem for the parents if the parents have not yet filed.   Your mom does not need to wait for you to amend.   She can mail her own return whenever she has it ready.   She will not be able to e-file even after you amend.
