Attempting to file under two accounts is not an issue. If, or when, the second account tried to e-file, you would receive a notice indicating that the return has been "rejected."  The reason the IRS would e-file reject such a return, is that, from their point of view, one tax return had already been filed using that same set of Social Security Numbers . . . and for both legal and fraud protection reasons, it won't allow another return through the system for that tax year.  Of course, if necessary, a taxpayer can later "amend" their own original return to fix mistakes, but that's a separate issue.

If you're not sure that your first attempt at e-filing went through the system correctly, we would respectfully suggest waiting up to 48 hours to see if you receive electronic confirmation that your tax filing was accepted.  If you don't, then you can go back into your preferred online account and submit your tax return again (very carefully this time).  The worst thing that could possibly happen is that you'd receive an IRS e-file rejection notice, indicating that a current year return has already been filed with your SSNs.  And that's not any bad thing, because this set of circumstances should assure you that the first filing with through.

As for monitoring the ongoing status of your return in processing, you can follow your return (in broad measure, anyway), by going to the IRS's "Where's My Refund" page here:

I am currently having the same issue, does this mean you have to complete it and file for the second time? I did the first part of the process on accident even though I’ve already filed my taxes and I got a letter in the mail recently saying I’m getting charged a fee and I don’t know why if my ssn should be linked to the second account as well.

Do not attempt to e-file an original return twice. Any subsequent e-file with the same SSN will be rejected.

If you already e-filed, and you need to make changes, you can file an amended return, AFTER the original return has been processed.

If you are preparing an amended return, follow these steps:

First, check to be certain that your original return has been processed: refund received or payment processed, before starting to amend.

If you prepared your original tax return using TurboTax, log in to your account, open the tax return you already filed, and click on the link to amend your return. From there, the software will walk you through the process of filing the amendment.

If you didn't use TurboTax to file your tax return, you can use TurboTax to prepare the amendment. However, you'll first have to enter your information into TurboTax to match what you filed the first time, then start the process of amending it.

Then, review the 1040X itself.

Column A should show the original amount reported

Column B should show the net change— amount of increase or (decrease)

Column C should show the new correct amount for the line item

There are times when you should amend your return and times when you shouldn't. Here are some common situations that call for an amendment:

  • You realized you missed out on claiming a tax deduction or credit.
  • You accidentally claimed the wrong tax filing status.
  • You need to add or remove a dependent.
  • You forgot to claim taxable income on your tax return.
  • You realize you claimed an expense, deduction, or credit that you weren't eligible to claim.

See this article and this one for more information on filing an amended return with TurboTax.
