If you add a state in TurboTax online, the cost of the state will be added to the rest of your TurboTax charges. When you get to the File section, click Start to Review your order. You will see the charge for your state. You don't have to pay until you are ready to file.

If you are using TurboTax CD/Desktop,

• Click on the State Taxes tab
• You’ll see Let’s work on your state return. Continue.
• Then click Get Another State. You will see a pop-up to purchase a state.

You cannot prepare a state return in TurboTax without preparing federal.
