Actually, you do have to report income under $600. You won't get a 1099 form for it, but it is your responsibility to report any income.
I earned my Segal (Americorps) Education award while living and working in Utah. The address on my 1099-misc is my Utah Address. However, I moved to California and used the grant to pay tuition to UCLA. I am filing returns in both states. Which state do I report this grant?
Since you earned it in Utah, it would be Utah income.
Hi there,
Is the process for putting in the Ed Award still following the directions from the 2019 tax year?
Should I put my 1099 MISC information under the "Income from Form 1099-MISC" section of "Wages & Income" or should I follow the directions to file it under "Less Common Income" -> "Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C"?
Like others stated, I know it is not self employment income and don't want to overpay.
Thanks so much!
Since the income reported on your Form 1099-MISC is not directly for services performed but it is a bonus award, you can use the following steps to report it as other income and not self-employment income.
Even when I follow these instructions, turbotax tells me I still need to answer questions about the supposed business I have. The free file is supposed to write it in line 8 of schedule 1, but still making me answer questions like it still from self-employment. For example, asking me to write my "business code." Has anyone figured out how to fix this? Everything I try, I still get the same outcome of having to answer self-employment questions!
Please help!
This is handled as other income and not business income.
I'm having the same exact issue. I see you posted this in 2019, mind if I ask what you ended up doing?
Same issue!! Did you figure out what to do?
To report your Segal (Americorps) Award as income not subject to self-employment tax in TurboTax follow these steps:
@ploehrke
If I earned and was awarded the americorps award of $2000 but it is distributed to my son because I am over 55, to pay toward his student loan, who pays taxes?
The award is reported by the individual whose Social Security number is on the 1099-Misc form.
Follow the steps below to report this income that is not reported as self-employment income.
View the entries at Tax Tools / Print Center / Print, save or preview this year's return / Include government and TurboTax worksheets.
The income will be listed on line 8z of the Schedule 1 Additional Income and Adjustments to Income and line 8 of the Federal 1040 tax return.
