How is it determined whether I have to pay the IRS taxes or receive a tax return?

Prepare a tax return and enter all of your income and the amounts of tax withheld from that income.  And enter any information regarding tax credits or  deductions you are eligible for.    If you had more tax withheld from your income than your tax liability, you get a refund.   A federal refund will be shown on line 35a of your Form 1040.

 

If you did not pay enough tax during the year, you will owe tax due.  That will be shown on line 37 of your Form 1040.

 

 

A 1040 is the tax return form you prepare here to send to the IRS.   If you start entering data in this software you are preparing a Form 1040.   Please look at it so you will know what you are sending to the IRS:
