How do I track down missing w-2’s?

I’m trying to get copies of my w-2’s from the last few years. Some are missing. How can I get new copies?

How do I track down missing w-2’s?

The easiest way is to contact your employers.  They are used to looking them up. It should not be a big deal.

If your employer is unable to be contacted, maybe it was a small company that has gone out of business, then your only choice is to contact the IRS.  This will take a really long time, perhaps 6 weeks or even more.

If you need them to file a return, it may be better to file the return, and guess the amounts and the information.  Pay any tax due.  At the same time, apply to get copies from the IRS.  After you obtain the correct W-2's, file an amended return to correct the info.    This way, you'll stop accruing penalties for failing to file.

For this year you may be able to access the Form W-2 on the company's website or by calling their payroll department. However, if it is not possible to obtain another copy of the form, there are two options.

  1. Take your last 2022 pay stub and call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040
  2. The IRS will ask you for information before following up with your employer
  3. After notifying the IRS, you can either continue waiting for your W-2
  4. Or paper-file your return using Form 4852 and your last pay stub

You can obtain wage and income information reported to the IRS for prior years with a tax transcript from your IRS online account. They will not have tax year 2022 available yet but will have 2021 and 2020.

I highly recommend that everyone create an online account on the IRS website to verify the status of returns, payments, refunds,  stimulus information and so much more.
