If you are using TurboTax Online, you will have to create a new, separate account to prepare another return.
When you use Online TurboTax, you can prepare one return per account. Each return needs a separate account and user ID. If you use the same account and user ID for a second return, you overwrite the first one and lose it forever.
When you use Desktop TurboTax, which you install from a CD or download to your own hard drive, you can prepare and e-file multiple returns for the cost of the software. You can e-file up to 5 Federal returns. There is no limit to the number you can prepare, but after five, you will have to print and mail them. If you have multiple returns to prepare for friends and family, TurboTax Desktop is more cost effective.
I know I can file 5 federalreturns, however how do I start another family members return using the same laptop? The program keeps starting my own return I already filed
If you are using the Desktop installed program go up to File-New. You can prepare unlimited returns and efile 5. The rest you have to print and mail.
This is important. If you do another return for someone else like your child and their name is the same or similar to yours then it might overwrite your return. You have to save each return with different names so you can tell them apart. Like if your name is John and your son is also named John it will save them with the same name so the second one will overwrite the first return. Go to File-SaveAs and give it a unique name.
