How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

@skst wrote:

Off the top of my head, there are a few differences in your example. You're not using "Spouse," and there is no value on line 1c (and, therefore, no value on line 7). (Is this an inherited RMD?) My guess is my example requires you to have a 1099-R that has a taxable amount on line 2b but checked "Taxable amount not determined," so you have to enter 0 for 2b (because of the aforementioned CARES Act making RMDs not required).

It it is a Traditional IRA (IRA/SEP/SIMPLE) box checked then box 1 and 2a MUST be the same.  To allow a rollover of an inherited IRA that is normally not allowed you have to say it was NOT inherited (that does not go on a tax return but just to get the rollover question)

You answer the RMD question that is was NOT a RMD and answer the COVID question that it is NOT a COVID related distribution.     A RMD distribution was not COVID related.

Delete the 1099-R to reset and re-enter.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I appreciate your input regarding how to work around this bug. The IRS instructions say to compute the tax myself and, therefore, enter 0 on line 2b. After I overrode TT20's incorrect value on line 7, everything was fine. That seems like a simpler solution than stating this is not an inherited IRA just to make TT20 display the correct questions that it should have displayed in the first place.

Now it seems that there are two bugs in TT20: 1) It should enter the correct value on line 7, and 2) it should display the COVID/CARES questions for inherited IRAs.

You cannot e-file with any overrides.  Line 7 should be blank for a rollover.  (That is not an IRS worksheet just an internal TurboTax worksheet).

There is no bug.    And the IRS instructions do NOT say that.

https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1099r

IRAs other than Roth IRAs.

Traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA.

Generally, you are not required to compute the taxable amount of a traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA nor designate whether any part of a distribution is a return of basis attributable to nondeductible contributions. Therefore, except as provided below or elsewhere in these instructions, report the total amount distributed from a traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA in box 2a. This will be the same amount reported in box 1. Check the "Taxable amount not determined" box in box 2b.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I am not convinced that it is not a bug when TT20 copies the wrong value to line 7--regardless of how that value came to be.

I also noticed that when you and I say "No, this IRA was not inherited," TT20 still asks when the person died. (Presumably because we entered "Distribution code 4" which is death.) If it's not inherited, who died?

Also, using your method prevents ticking the Inherited IRA box "from someone other than a spouse" (in my case). This seems like an indefensible omission in my return since it is, in fact, inherited.

Therefore, I think it's more accurate (and easier) to enter everything correctly and then go into the Form 1099-R and manually tick Box B1. (Again, it seems like another bug that TT20 does not give the user the opportunity to roll over an inherited IRA distribute, given the CARES Act.)

By the way, overriding a value in the 1099-R Summary does not prevent me from e-filing.

As I said the ONLY purpose of the "is it inherited" question is to PREVENT rolling it over, but that is allowed for 2020 only.  So to get the rollover question you have to tell TurboTax to allow rollovers by saying that it was not inherited.   That does not change the code 4 that means inherited, but it does allow the rollover which is the only say to get the word "ROLLOVER" on the 1040 line 4 that is required by the IRS or the will disallow it and send you a bill for the box 1 amount or tax.

The code 4 is what prompts the question of the persons age when they died.

They probably should have removed the inherited question for 2020 and put it back next year but they did  not.   But the workaround is simple, just answer NO.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

On my taxes, I have two Schedule E rental properties and each has its own worksheet. On each worksheet in the General Information section, I have typed in the physical address for the property. However, on Schedule E, the physical address for Property B does not transfer over from the worksheet to Schedule E. Turbotax will not allow me to type in the address directly on Schedule E, so it remains blank. This is an error that has been present for several years and so far has not resulted in a question from the IRS, but I'm just waiting for the day it does. Please fix this.

I'm a fellow user and forum helper.   I just ran some scenarios.   I created two worksheets (Property A and Property B) and entered a property address on each one.   For me, the addresses on both worksheets correctly flowed to the Schedule E, except in one circumstance.   Look at the General Information section of each worksheet, and check what number is showing for "Property type."    If the Property type on your Worksheet B says 6 (Royalty), then the property address will NOT flow to Schedule E, because the IRS does not require the address of a royalty property on Schedule E.

According to the TurboTax help for the Schedule E, Line 1a (where rental property addresses ultimately show up):

"The address of each rental property will be filled in (on the Schedule E), but will be blank for each royalty property. This is in accordance with the IRS instructions for Schedule E."

I tested all the other property type numbers, and with the other numbers the address flowed normally from Property B worksheet to the Schedule E.

So see if your issue is due to a property type of 6 on your Worksheet for Property B.  If your property type is indeed "6", then it's behaving correctly.

Are you trying to prepare your Schedule E solely in Forms Mode, or are you just trying to correct something by that method?   Normally you should be entering all the rental information through the step-by-step interview instead of manually entering in Forms Mode on the worksheets.  Those are complicated worksheets with complex flow between those and other worksheets with the Schedule E.  The step-by-step also has some interview questions that may not be obvious if entering just on the worksheet.

If it turns out that it is not the "Property type" entry causing your problem, I'll ask someone familiar with multiple rental properties to assist you.

You have nailed the answer 100%. The property IS a royalty property and I'd never dived deeply enough in the instructions to locate the reference that you quoted. Thanks for the reassurance that all is well.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I erroneously input a non-taxable MO state refund (I took the standard deduction in 2019) of $1199 on lines A and C of the worksheet on MO-A which feeds line 9 on MO-A. I need to remove this error to correct my MO state refund for 2020. I tried to eliminate Form MO-A and that did not work. It did not eliminate the form. I need to eliminate the $1199 from lines A and C which feeds line 9 on MO-A. I tried to remove the input on the MO-A and could not. How can I remove these entries from MO-A??

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

There is an error on the worksheet for calculating late payment penalties for the state of Minnesota (MN).  The federal worksheet seemed to work without any problems (at least it didn't show that I owed a penalty).  (FYI, I paid all my quarterly payments on time for both the federal and state returns. Also, the amounts paid were such that I should not have been assessed a penalty.  I have small refunds on both returns and my estimated tax payments were equal for all 4 quarters for the state.)

The worksheet for MN assumes that the estimated tax payments made for Q1 and Q2, which were due 7/15/2020 for both the federal and state of MN, are applied as Q3 payments. This resulted in a small penalty on my tax return which not only was incorrect but prevented me from e-filing my state return. I decided not to file until I heard back from you. I was able to get around this problem by using 4/15/2020 and 6/15/2020 for the Q1 and Q2 payment dates respectively. Please let me know when this issue will be resolved. I do not know if this applies to other states as well.

Thanks in advance.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I finally realized that when I clicked on the line I wanted tot revise, a box to the left popped up. I clicked on it and it took me to where I revised my own error. It looked like a Q in a box and it did the deed. Utterly dopey on my part.

I guess I never made an input error before and had no idea what that little box was. Live and learn.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

There seems to be a bug in Turbo-Tax.  When I click on capital gains in the income section it asks me if I want to upgrade from  the Deluxe version to Premier.  When I click on continue with turbotax deluxe, the program freezes and no longer is responding.  I have tried several times to continue but it always freezes and will not respond.  I think that this may be a bug in the Program.  I do not really need Premier, I just want to look at my capital gains that I downloaded from my investment adviser.  Please advise.

I assume you are using desktop Deluxe (CD/download).   Is it the Mac or Windows version?  And what OS version?

Do you have the latest TurboTax program updates?

Desktop Deluxe handles everything that desktop Premier can handle, so any suggestion to upgrade is mostly a marketing tool.  They are both fully-featured.  The only difference is the amount of help and guidance.  Plus Deluxe comes in 2 versions--with or without a state program.
