How do I remove Child tax credit from my return>? It keeps getting rejected

Why do you think the child tax credit is the problem?    If you are eligible for the CTC it is added to your refund automatically.

You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.

Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed.  Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.

What is the rejection code or rejection message?

If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2022 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late.   Try using zero instead.

If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

How do I remove Child tax credit from my return>? It keeps getting rejected

If your return is rejecting due to the Child Tax Credit or a Dependent on your return, please follow these steps:

  1. Review the info entered for each of dependent and verify that the name, Social Security number, date of birth, and relationship entered are accurate.  If you find an error, correct it and refile.
  2. If the info is correct, and you feel this rejection was an error, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 800-772-1213 to verify that their records are accurate.
  3. If SSA records need to be corrected, please keep in mind that it can take up to four weeks for the IRS to receive this information.
  4. After four weeks, you can refile your return.
  5. If it continues to be rejected, or if you do not want to wait four weeks to refile electronically, you can print and file by mail.
