How do I input a PUA-1099G?

There is an option for 1099Gs, but the "boxes" aren't the same as for the PUA-1099G. It keeps telling me "needs reviewed," but I've input all information given.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION

Unemployment compensation is taxable on your federal return.

You will have to enter a 1099G that is issued by your state.

Some states will mail out the 1099G.  Or you might need to go to your state’s unemployment website and use the password, etc. that you have been using to certify for weekly benefits to get your 1099G from the state’s site.

Enter your 1099G in Federal>Wages & Income>Unemployment

Go through the screens very carefully, making sure to enter any federal/state tax you had withheld from the unemployment.

The PUA preceding the 1099-G form is used to report different types of unemployment benefits received but it is reported the same way on the return. Your unemployment income is reported on schedule 1 and will carry over to form 1040 line 8

Make sure you have entered the PUA 1099-G form correctly. To report form 1099-G:

  • Login to your account.
  • Select Federal from the left menu.
  • Go to Wages and Income then Income and Expenses.
  • Scroll down to Unemployment.

If TurboTax is asking for your parents' income, it must be because you are subject to "kiddie tax."  The kiddie tax is a tax imposed on individuals under 19 years old whose investment and unearned income is higher than an annually determined threshold.

If you already filed your return and you need to adjust your entries for form 1099-G, you need to amend your return.

How do I amend my 2020 return?

How do I input a PUA-1099G?

I did do all those steps, I am 21 and had one semester at college so this will be my last year of being a dependent because I am done college at this point.  I did not list my parents information becasue I dont know it.  Was I supposed to answer those specific questions regarding my parents income? I was confused as to what that had to do with my tax return and unemployment.  What information would I need from them in order to correct my return and when can I correct my return?  Thank you for your response

How do I input a PUA-1099G?

If you qualify for IRS Form 8615, yes, you need to answer the questions about your parents income.  Unemployment is considered unearned income for purposes of the form and unearned income over $2,200 triggers the form.  Review your answers to see whether this form is required.

IRS Form 8615 is used for children under age 18 and certain older children for whom unearned income over $2,200 is taxed at the parent's rate if the parent's rate is higher than the child's. If the child's unearned income is more than $2,200, use IRS Form 8615 to figure the child's tax.

Review your answers to see whether this form is required.

When filing the form, you must provide the name and Social Security Number of a parent, as well as which filing status the parent is using, such as single, joint or married filing separately. The form has three parts:

  • Part I identifies the child's net unearned income and how much of it is subject to the kiddie tax
  • Part II calculates the kiddie tax based on the parent's tax rate
  • Part III calculates the child's tax that is used on the child's Form 1040

This TurboTax Help explains who must file IRS form 8615:  Tax for Certain Children Who Have Unearned Income.

For 2020, a child must file Form 8615 if all of the following conditions apply:

  • The child has more than $2,200 in unearned income
  • The child is required to file a tax return
  • The child does not file a joint tax return with a spouse
  • At least one of the child's parents is alive
  • The child is within certain age limits

For tax purposes, the child's "age" is the age on December 31. The child must file the form if any of these conditions apply:

  • The child is under 18 at the end of the year
  • The child is 18 years old and does not have earned income that is more than half of the child's support for the year, or
  • The child was a full-time student age 19-23 and does not have earned income that is more than half of the child's support

In addition, the IRS defines unearned income as:

  • Interest, dividend, or investment income,
  • Retirement or Social Security income,
  • Alimony or child support,
  • Unemployment or worker's compensation,
  • Gifts, prizes, awards, or winnings,
  • Inheritances,
  • Income received while incarcerated, even if it involves active work.
