No, TurboTax does not provide its users with attorneys. Your son made an extremely common mistake. We gets requests for help all the time from parents whose dependent kids incorrectly said on their tax returns that they could not be claimed. The remedy is to file your own return that claims him and file it by mail. If you mailed it and the IRS says they did not receive it, then mail them another copy of your return. You have not mentioned how long ago you mailed the return. It typically takes at least three or four weeks after mailing the return for a human to open the envelope and enter your information into the system.
Your son, meanwhile has to wait for his return to be fully processed and then amend to change the way he answered the question about whether he can be claimed.
Thank you. His agreed return has been accepted. I mailed mine in April. No one will answer the phone except to day that there's nothing on record. But I have USPS proof they received it. No one is able to help me and I don't live near Kansas City to just show up there myself. IRS won't even allow me to schedule an appointment at my local office since this situation doesn't involve a payment. They have hijacked my refund and TurboTax also seems unconcerned. How many copies should I continue to send when they will probably continue to lie about having it in their possession?
I suggest you calm down a bit and give the IRS time to enter your mailed return into the system. You say only that you have the certified mail response that it was received; that does not necessarily mean a human at the IRS has entered that return into the system. You did not answer the question of how long ago they received it.
And...even if your son's amended return has been "accepted", that will not change things this year in terms of sorting out the duplicate use of his SSN on his own return and on yours. It takes four months or more for an amended return to be processed.
TurboTax gets no information from the IRS after you file your tax return. TT provided do-it-yourself software for you to prepare a tax return. TurboTax cannot intercede with the IRS for you.
Please forgive my rant. I have yet to find anyone willing to help me after taking hours off work and weeks of trying a bunch of dead end leads. I have yet to have anyone tell me "this is a normal experience." Hence my frustration. The IRS received my physical packet on May 7. Where does it sit for 4 months after being signed for? Why does TT keep prompting me to "fix my rejected return" but fail to be able to?
