At very beginning of turbotax 2024 session, they asked if I had a refund in 2023 and if it was applied to my estimated tax. I said, "no refund" but that is not correct. I had refund and it was applied to estimated tax how do icorrect that

I will assume you haven't yet filed.   If you have already filed, the answer would be quite different and more complicated.

So if you haven't filed, here's how to enter your 2023 overpayment which you applied to 2024 taxes.   If you used TurboTax in the same account as last year, it might already show up there, but you need to check and be sure, and enter it if necessary.

I assume you're using Online TurboTax.  Below are 2 different ways to get to the right place:

Open your return interview and in the left menu column:

  • Federal Tab
  • Subtab Deductions & Credits.
  • On the Your Tax Breaks page, scroll down and if necessary, choose to open "other tax breaks."
  • On the longer list of tax breaks scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid. Expand that topic.  Under that, choose subtopic "Income Taxes Paid"
  • On the "Income Taxes Paid" page scroll down to 2023 Refund Applied to 2024.
  • Expand that section and select the type of overpayment (federal/state/local).

Or here's a shortcut you may be able to use for a faster way:

  • Open your return and in the top right corner go to Search tool (magnifying glass).
  • Enter the term applied overpayment without quotes.  Pay no attention to the suggestions that drop down.  Instead click the adjacent magnifying glass in that search box.
  • Then you should see a link jump to applied overpayment.
  • When you arrive at the Estimates and Other Income Taxes Paid page, scroll down and expand 2023 Refund Applied to 2024.
