How do I claim a credit for disability

Possibly.  If you meet the criteria, you may be able to claim the Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit, and there is a special exemption allowance of $3,400 for those who are deaf, blind, hemiplegic, paraplegic, quadriplegic, or totally and permanently disabled.  You will see this exemption on box 9b of your MI-1040

When you walk through the steps in TurboTax, in the federal personal info section be sure to check that you are disabled.  Then you may be asked additional questions in the Michigan state section.

The Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit is available for those individuals who

  •  were a resident of Michigan for at least 6 months and,
  • owned a home where property taxes were levied and paid (disabled people may be able to delay payment) or rented a home under a rental contract and
  • had a homestead in Michigan
  • have total household resources under $71,500
  • for disabled individuals the credit is calculated differently and may be worth up to 100% of the  amount of property taxes exceed a certain percent of your income instead of the normal 60%.
  • The Maximum credit is $1,900
