You cannot change your parents' return. If your parents filed incorrectly they can amend their own tax return. What happened? Did you file saying that you cannot be claimed as a dependent--but they claimed you?
If your parents claimed you and filed already then the only way you can file a tax return that says you cannot be claimed is to print, sign and mail your own return. And.....the rule is if you CAN be claimed you are supposed to say on your own tax return that you can be claimed. Do you fit the criteria to be a qualifying child or qualifying relative for your parents?
WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?
You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2020 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:
Qualifying child
•They are related to you.
•They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
•They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
•They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.
•They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
• They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
Qualifying relative
•They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
•They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
•They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
•They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.
•They lived with you the entire year.
•They made less than $4300 (not counting Social Security)
•You provided more than half of their financial support. More info
When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.
Related Information:
•Does a dependent have to live with me?
•What does "financially support another person" mean?
If you do NOT fit the criteria to be claimed, you do not need to wait for your parents to amend. Their amended return will never catch up in the system for you to e-file. Mail your return.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Filing status is single or married jointly or separately. You cannot change your parents tax return.
