@turbotaxalister - what do you mean you are "independent"?
did you enter form 1098-T which may make you eligible for a tax credit? that may create an issue with 'free'
if you earned less than $12,950 there is no requirement to file. However, if there were tax withholdings, the only way to get them back is to file.
