You need to find out from your father if you have been claimed on his tax return. Your Social Security number cannot be used on two different 2020 tax returns so if Dad claimed you and you try to say you cannot be claimed, one of your returns is going to be rejected.
First----do you fit the criteria to be claimed as someone's dependent? If you CAN be claimed then you have to say yes in My Info when it asks if you can be claimed.
WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?
You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2019 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:
Qualifying child
•They are related to you.
•They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
•They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
•They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.
•They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
• They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
Qualifying relative
•They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
•They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
•They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
•They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.
•They lived with you the entire year.
•They made less than $4300 (not counting Social Security)
•You provided more than half of their financial support. More info
When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.
Related Information:
•Does a dependent have to live with me?
•What does "financially support another person" mean?
If you said on your tax return that you cannot be claimed ---but you can be claimed---then Dad's tax return will be rejected when he tries to e-file. That will mean you have to amend your tax return and Dad will only be able to file by mail; he will not be able to e-file this year.
If you CANNOT be claimed---and Dad already claimed you----then you are the one who has to print, sign and mail your own return, and Dad has to amend his own return after it has been fully processed.
If you CAN be claimed as a dependent you cannot get stimulus money---and if you get it by filing incorrectly you have to pay it back.
I've not lived with my dad in over 2 and half years and when he put me on his taxes and i never got stimulus checks cus of him and im disabled im deaf and I filled my taxes to get my stimulus tax credit and then he try to file me again on taxes with out asking me first then he called me and said that either I was going to be flagged or him but my wife did my taxes on the 5th of February and my dad did his a couple days ago
