How can I confirm that my 2021 Fed & State refunds were applied toward my 2022 estimated tax payments?

This is my first attempt at helping someone else, so please be patient.  When it asked me to print my federal return (at the end of doing the work), I noticed a form called "Tax Payments Worksheet".  If you open that worksheet there is a section titled "Tax Payments Other Than Withholding".  In that section (on sheet 1 of that worksheet) line 6 is "Overpayments applied to 2022".  My amount of "refund in 2021" applied to 2022 is found there.  Hope this helps with federal.  Since all states forms are different, you would have to ask someone from your specific state for help with the state info.

You can verify any payments to the IRS and the dates made on your online IRS account. I highly recommend that everyone create an  account on the IRS website to verify the status of returns, payments, refunds,  stimulus information and so much more.

Click to create an IRS Website Account.

For your state return, it will depend on the state. They all have slightly different tax forms and websites.

Maybe one other thing is important.  I have assumed in my response that you used TurboTax to file your 2021 taxes, insomuch as I DID NOT ENTER ANYTHING REGARDING MY 2021 OVERPAYMENTS INTO TURBOTAX 2022.  They were imported from TurboTax 2021 automatically.  So, the amounts for both federal and state (Utah, in my case) are carryovers.  Obviously, if you did not use TurboTax to do your 2021 returns, you will have to enter your federal and state "overpayments" aka refunds, kept by the taxing entities, MANUALLY.  That is something I have no experience with.

When you transfer last year's return over, we'll also transfer any refunds you applied from your 2021 return.  You'll see this credit in your refund meter when you start your 2022 return.

If you didn't transfer your 2021 return over, you can manually enter the amount by doing this:

  1. Open (continue) your return, if you don't already have it open
  2. Search for refund applied to this year and select the Jump to link in the search results
  3. Scroll down to the 2021 Refund Applied to 2022 section
  4. Select Start next to the appropriate category (federal, state, or local) and follow the instructions
