i graduated may 2025 and i received a 1098-T from my university but i’m having difficulty inputting the numbers correctly on TurboTax.
all of my tuition was payed for with scholarships with some extra given to me as a refund. according to my bursar, “all of my tuition charges for my spring 2025 semester were made in the tax year 2024. all payments were made in January, so that went into the tax year 2025.”
because of this, on my 2025 1098-T, Box 1 is put as $0.00 and Box 5 is around $8k (scholarship for that semester) however, because the tuition charges were not reported for 2025 on the 1098-T, TurboTax is automatically claiming my $8k in scholarships as income. Box 7 is not checked on my 2024 1098-T.
how do i file the numbers correctly so that i am reporting that i received $2k as refund as income, but $6k of the $8k scholarship was tuition that was paid?
is there a way on TurboTax to do this?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
It's a two step process.
Step 1 -The program will allow you to mark that some or all of the scholarship went against tuition from a prior year.
Step 2 - look at prior year return and make sure you claimed this scholarship income last year. You may need to amend the prior year return.
