Head of Household for California but no dependent

Lacerte lets you file for federal and California as head of household but not taking a dependent even though you pay for half of the persons living expenses. The federal return went through ok but California says that you have to have a dependent to claim head of household which means you have to pass the income test to qualify as a dependent. So California denied the head of household status because a dependent made too much money. Has anybody run into this before. I cannot believe that Lacerte is wrong.
