Graduate student attends School in Missouri having Illinois driver license and wants to keep Illinois residency

Hi! I am a graduate student earning a scholarship in Missouri’s university. The Missouri’s university only issued me 1098T where the scholarship is reported. I used the part of scholarship to pay rooms and boarding. I have my Illinois driver license and want to keep my Illinois residency. Is this possible? For filing tax purpose, which state should I file as resident? Or I have to file as resident for both of states? How should I file? Am I able to remain a IL resident and file taxes in MO as resident or non resident?

1. Yes. College is considered a temporary absence from home.

2. You are an IL resident so you file an IL resident return.

3. You earned income from Missouri. If it is $600 or more, you will file a nonresident MO return. See Individual Income Tax FAQs - Missouri Department of Revenue

4. Yes, IL will give you a credit for the double taxed income. Prepare the nonresident MO return first before completing your IL return.
