From unemployed to new job

Hello,

I was unemployed for 7 months in 2021 and got a new job 2 months ago. Is there something in particular that I was supposed to do while having a change beside stopping my EDD and starting my new job? I just want to make sure I won't end up paying a lot of taxes.

No----when it is time to file your tax return you will need to enter the 1099G for the unemployment you received in 2021 and include the W-2 for your job---all of it on the same tax return.   We do not yet know if there will be federal tax on all of the unemployment or if any of the tax will be waived.   The tax law that passed in March 2021 was only for unemployment received in 2020.   It would take another act of Congress to change it for 2021 income tax returns.  Make sure you are having tax withheld from those new paychecks.

I remember choosing having a withholding on my unemployment checks what is the state maybe?

Also at my new job when I did my W4 I'm not sure I did it correctly. I'm a single mom with one kid, what was I supposed to put? I just want to make sure I'm adjusting it if I did not properly did it.
