Yes, you can pay more than the Form 4868 estimates for your tax due with your extension to file. You can also pay through the IRS website if you choose.

Here is some information concerning the IRS identity verification process. If you continue to have difficulty, you may have to contact the IRS at 800-830-5084.

Thank You.

When I try to pay through one of the IRS payment provider using credit card, I get "
Your payment cannot be greater than your total tax liability."

I am trying to higher taxes as a precaution and the site is not allowing.

Are you paying directly on the IRS direct pay website?

They do not limit how much you can pay.

Thanks Vanessa.  Directpay does not accept credit card hence I have to use pay1040.com or service provider. Please can you let me know how I can pay more than what is arrived at 4868 line #4.

You can complete and fill in the mount you want on this IRS form.  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf

You can also cross out the amount on the voucher you have - just be sure to indicate on your check that it is for 2024 tax payment.

I used Turbotax to file extension. Turbotax filled in the estimated tax liability (4868 line #4). I have to pay more that estimated liability as I am expecting to include foreign income which I did not. The question is:  How can I pay more than amount mentioned in line #4 using credit card online?

Can someone please please help?

You can pay the amount allowed with your extension, then pay an additional amount as an estimated tax payment for 2024 with a credit card by using this IRS link.

Thanks, this helps.  I am paying $4000 for the estimated liability of approx $1500 to avoid any penalties.  My questions are:

1. Does TT share the 4968 line #4 data with IRS?

2. I am seeing "Make your estimate as accurate as you can with the
information you have. If we later find that the estimate
wasn’t reasonable, the extension will be null and void." in the instructions.

Will my overpaying considered as unreasonable?

Regards

Yes, whatever you enter on Form 4868 will be sent to the IRS.  No, the extension will be accepted if you receive acceptance. The reconciliation will occur when you file your tax return. It will not be null or void.

No the IRS will accept your payment and will not consider it unreasonable. All fines and penalties are based on tax balance due so if you should have a refund in the end, there is no reason for concern of overpayment of estimated tax.
