Form 1095-A Issues

The agent I just spoke to was not able to help, so am hoping the community can help. I received ACA health insurance last year and received a Form 1095-A in my name. When I add the 1095-A into TurboTax, the resulting form does not include my name/SSN; instead, it lists my husband. This is an issue since my husband does not receive Covered CA and deducts the cost of his health insurance on his Schedule C.

I cannot file this return because it is erroneous. If I don't find out a way to add my name to the 1095-A form, I will have to use another program, which is very frustrating.

Please help.

I am using TurboTax Premium 2023, which is not an option under the Product pull-down menu, by the way.

Form 1095-A Issues

The form is designed to list the names of both taxpayers when filing married-joint and the social security number of the taxpayer that is listed first on the Form 1040. If you don't want it displayed this way, you can clear the return and start it over while listing yourself first when you begin the return. If you do this, however, it will still list both of your names in the first box, but it would have your social security number listed next to it. The first box says "Name shown on your return", since there are two names on the return, it seems appropriate that both names would be listed, as it is a joint return and you are both responsible for it.

I don't think you can find other tax software that would treat it differently, as I believe this is how the form was intended to be filled out. You could complete the form manually and submit your return by mailing it in as a work-around.

Form 1095-A Issues

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, the top line on the form properly lists both taxpayers, since we're filing jointly. However, the line directly below that has checkboxes for Taxpayer, Spouse, and Spouse is covered by plan.

I believe TurboTax should enable Box 4 - Recipient's Name, Box 5 - Recipient's SSN, and Recipient's DOB to be entered. Then the form and resulting form 8962 would have my name/SSN instead of my husband's. As it is, these forms are not correct.

Can you please advise? It seems absurd to have to print out a form and then modify it manually - kind of defeats the purpose of an online app...

Thanks in advance.

Form 1095-A Issues

Despite the fact that you are the only one of the two of you who is covered the ACA and the premium tax credit are only available to married couples filing jointly and the subsidies are based on your household income.  The IRS form is not designed to separate you and your spouse because you are not separated when figuring the credit.

So, even though yours is the only name and social security number on the 1095-A, your spouse is part of the calculation on the 8962 and it is totally appropriate and ok if they are the one listed at the top of the form.
