Foreign Income, Deduction or Expense?

When I first did my taxes TurboTax asked if I wanted to enter my foreign dividends/taxes as a deduction or expense.  I chose expenses.  When my taxes were completed Turbo Tax decided it would better for me to take the standard deduction which I did.  This, unfortunately, nullified my foreign taxes.  TurboTax should have given me the option of going back and correcting this error.  I found out myself after reviewing my printed return.  I just filed an amended return and I should be getting back more than $2K.
