I have finished my tax prep, but in the final "file" stage it's suddenly telling me I need to upgrade to Premier because "You have Capital Gains or Losses (Schedule D)."
But I really don't. The only thing I have is Capital Gains Distributions from mutual funds that was reported on a 1099-DIV. I never received an 8949. I should be able to report it on the 1040 line and check "Schedule D not required."
How do I get out of this loop?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Actually you will need to upgrade to at least Deluxe because you need Sch 1 which the FREE version will not allow.
Be aware that the online TurboTax Free Edition is very limited to only simple returns--so be careful----if your return requires any of the schedules or extra forms then an upgrade to a paid version will be required. https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/
There are still eight various software providers who will participate in the Free File program ... if your AGI is $73K or less then check them out ...
Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free:
I'm using Deluxe already. It's claiming I have to upgrade to TurboTax Premier.
You can :
1) upgrade to keep using the online program
2) switch to the downloaded version ... use Basic if you don't need a state ... Deluxe if you do.
3) switch to one of the IRS FREE FILE options if your AGI will be less than $73K
Thanks, but that's not great advice.
I called the Intuit support line. They agreed that a schedule D is not required in my situation and they could not understand why their program was insisting that one was required.
They gave me a code to work around the problem.
