Filing form 1042-S and W2

Hi I am on O-1 Visa Status. For 2019 I recieved 2 W2s which I will file on turbo Tax but I also recieved a 1042-S for an independent service that I did, the 1042S gross income is less then $150. I am unable to file it in TurboTax. Is it legal for me to file my W2s here and report my 1042-S on another platform? (like Glacier - since this one supports 1042S) I am really not sure where to place the 1042S since it is blocking my process of getting my taxes done

What is the income code in box 1 on your Form 1042S?

Per Form 1042S instructions, the code is for "Compensation for independent personal services".  Technically, it should be reported as a self-employed to pay self-employment tax if over $400.   Since the payment is below $400, you would report it as other income, instead.

In TurboTax online,

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • To the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "other reportable income" and Enter
  • Select Jump to other reportable income
  • Follow prompts

Thank you Very much! I unfortunately have already filed my 2 W2s and state taxes return a few days ago and completely forgot to file the 1042-S. Can I file it again on its own?

Thanks

Yes, you can file Form 1042-S on its own.  Form 1042-S does not need to filed with your income tax return. Fill out Form 1042-S and then mail it to the address specified in the form instructions.

If adding the Form 1042S is going to change your total refund or tax due, you might need to amend your Form 1040.  Please continue to read:

If you have already filed, you might not be able to go back to fix.  You can return to the program to make corrections without amending only if your return is being rejected. If your return is accepted, to edit your information, you will have to amend it. You cannot just go back to edit.

If your return got rejected for any reason, you can return to the program to edit information along with other changes and re-submit it. For instructions, click here Fix a reject 2019.  You do not need to file an amendment 1040-X.

If your return has been accepted, you will have to amend by filing a Form 1040-X.  Click here for instructions Amend 2019.   Please note that the 2019 Form 1040-X is not available until 2/26/2020.  Please come back later.  Also, be aware that you should not try to amend your return until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.  If by editing the information does not change the refund or amount you owe, you do not need to submit the amendment.

Where do I report Form 1042-S.  It was given to me from gambling winnings at casino.

Form 1042-S reports income earned by a foreign person in the United States. If you are not a US citizen or resident alien, you would need to file form 1040NR to report your income. You cannot do that using TurboTax, but you can use the tax preparation software of "Sprintax" as follows:
