Filed 2024 extension; extension approved, then received irs letter saying I didn’t file. This is the first time I’ve ever received such a letter after filing an extension

i surprised that the IRS would already be sending a nonfiling notice for 2024

is the notice for 2024? you should not have received it if you timely and properly filed your extension for the year and it was accepted.

if this is the case call the iRS at the phone number in the notice. 800-829-8374

or call the general number

Call 800-829-1040

  • Choose your language,
  • Then choose option 2
  • Then 1
  • Then 3
  • Then 2
  • When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN do nothing – wait - - After it asks twice, you will get another menu
  • Then 2
  • Then 3

It should then transfer you to an agent. Note when its phone line are busy you may be on hold for a long while or disconnected

Are you certain that letter is about your 2024 return?   Or is it for a previous year?  Read it carefully.  It would be very odd to receive that letter in July 2025 for a 2024 return even if you had not requested an extension.

It is likely an error.

There have been A LOT of people receiving those needless letters in the past few days.  It is likely an IRS computer glitch (some people have commented that a late 2023 return seems to trigger it more often).

If you filed the extension, just ignore the letter.

Oh it was definitely for 2024, and yep I double checked that my extension had been accepted as well, and it certainly was according to TurboTax.

Be sure and save a copy of your acceptance in case you ever need to provide such to the IRS.

Do you have an IRS online account?   If so, log in and go to the Tax Records section, and choose to look at transcripts.   On the next page, for transcript type choose either an Account Transcript or "Record of Account" transcript.   When you view the transcript and scroll down a little, you should see a section of Transaction codes.    After I file an extension request, my Record of Account transcripts show this transaction code:

460 Extension of time to file tax return
It will show the date and any payment amount proffered with the extension.

Also, if you go back to the Home page of the IRS account and look for "Tax Payments", if you made a payment with the extension request, it should show up in the list of transactions there, too, but it may label it as a "balance payment."
