Hi there,

I am a resident alien for tax year 2023. I got 1042-S with details as follows:

Income code (box 1): 23

Gross income (box 2): $xxxx (non-zero)

Chapter indicator (box 3): 3

Exemption Code (box 3a): 00

Tax Rate (box 3b): 30.00

Exemption Code (box 4a): 15

Tax Rate (box 4b): $.0000

Tax paid by withholding agent (amounts not witheld): $xxxx (non-zero)

Other fields are $0.00

How should I put it into TurboTax?

Looking at my list of 1042S Codes Explained:

Box 1, Code 23 is Other income

Chapter 3 is exempt income

exemption code 15 box 4a - not subject to withholding.

Enter the income:
1. go to the federal income section
2. scroll to the bottom
3. Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C, Start
4. Scroll to the bottom
5. Other reportable income, Start
6. Other taxable income?
7. Select YES
8. Description 1042-S
9. Amount, enter your amount
10. Continue

F1 resident alien form 1042 s income code 23

Hi,

Thanks for the answer.

So in that case, I only need to enter Gross income?

How about the Tax paid by the withholding agent (amounts not withheld)? Should I enter it somewhere?

Thanks!

Here is how to enter your federal tax amount paid to the withholding agent..

  1. With your return open.
  2. Go to Federal
  3. Click on Deductions & Credits.
  4. Click Show more to the right of Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
  5. Click on Income Taxes Paid.
  6. Scroll down to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2023.
  7. Click on Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099.
