I know exactly how much of my Exempt Interest Dividends are exempt in CA. However, that data was not entered into TT when I imported the 1099 data from Fidelity Investments. They never include it.
However, TT is trying to tell me that I have entered incorrect information for my State, as it wants me to assign the entire amount of Exempt Dividends to a single State! How do I make it clear to TT that I know what I am doing? I already have the amount calculated for CA vs multiple other states.
TT is not asking me the correct questions! It says that it will help me enter the data "once I have it" yet it doesn't want to accept the correct figures, which DO ADD UP to exactly the total! This is really irritating because TT should actually be SHOWING ME how to do this, as if it were my first time. Thank God I now know exactly where to find the figures that I need.
So it has to be some kind of language problem where TT does not communicate clearly enough how it wants me to enter the data. Can someone please tell me what's going on? I don't have any trouble when I enter the info manually, but I can't just pick and choose bits and pieces from the 1099, which is far too lengthy for me to enter manually.

not sure where it's stuck, I don't use import it's not worth the hassle. But either way you should be able to edit/review the 1099-DIV in Easy Step (the screen with the horrendous redesign showing a long list of all 1099s - from Wages & Income / I'll choose what I work on / "Update" on 1099-DIV category) - and then go thru the interview questions after the box input screen, it should ask you there about the state allocation for tax exempt dividends, there should be an option for multiple states where you can put in CA vs. "Multiple States" for the rest (don't forget US Territories if those are exempt in CA also).
You can also go into Forms mode and see what's going on with the 1099-DIV exempt interest allocation there
If it's still screwed up just input the 1099-DIV manually and delete the imported one.
