Every year looks like my NJ tax has not been calculated correctly. TurboTax handles it. 3 years later I have to pay with a penalty. Any idea why this happens?

Turbo tax uses my W2 that is uploaded, there is no manual intervention, so why would it do it wrong?

We can’t see your return so without more information it would be hard to answer your question.

"Every year "

Sounds like you keep making the same mistake and not learning from it.

We can't see your tax return.

What exactly did the state say is wrong on your New Jersey tax return? Please give specific line numbers and amounts, and list everything that the state says is wrong. Please reply for one specific year, preferably the most recent year for which you had to pay more tax, and tell us what year it is.

Did you live and work in New Jersey all year? Do you have any other income besides one W-2? Do you file as single? Do you have any dependents?

There is always "manual intervention." You have to go through the New Jersey interview in TurboTax. It's possible that you are answering a question incorrectly or entering some information incorrectly. Also, errors can occur when a W-2 is uploaded. You have to check the uploaded information to make sure that it matches the W-2 form that you received from your employer. For the year that we are looking at, can you confirm that the W-2 information in TurboTax matches the information on the W-2 from your employer, especially boxes 15, 16, and 17?
