Estimated Taxes 2023

Are the estimated tax payments on the page 1 of the Turbo Tax printout determined by the IRS?  I know my income is going to decrease next year as my husband died in 2022 and we will no longer recieve his Social Security or 100% of his pension.

I had to pay an additional $851.00 for 2022 in federal taxes.  Yest Turbo tax gave me vouchers to pay 1669.00 each quarter for 2023.  That would be a total of $6676.00.  An amount that does not make sense based on my expected decrease in income and the fact I only had to pay 851.00 total to the federal government for all of 2022.

Someone had said, Turbo Tax just comes up with these estimated tax payment numbers and they are not what is required by the IRS?  Is this true?  I have no problem paying estimated taxes, but I would like to figure out the amount that would make sense.  I know it will not be $1669.00 a quarter.

Those Forms 1040-ES are only for you use if you choose to use them.  They are not sent with your 2022 tax return so the IRS has no knowledge of these forms unless the are sent to the IRS by you.

If you do not need to pay estimated taxes for 2023 then you can discard these forms.
