I imported a 1099R from Fidelity that started a long problem-solving process. Box 2 has $0 on the form sent to me, but I imported the form and started a whole set of issues.
Issue 1: When I imported the form, the Box 2 entry of $0 did not carry over. Turbo Tax imported it as blank. I left Box 2 blank, figuring TT did it that way and would not make a difference. My return amount changed, and I could not figure out why. Changing Box 2 to a $0 did not solve the problem either as you will see below.
Issue 2: I deleted the 1099R form to re-enter the info, and TT did NOT correct the tax forms. Luckily I knew to close without saving the file and start over.
Issue 3: When I imported again, I tried adding the $0 in Box 2 as part of the import process. Still, the same issue as TT had already imported the form and calculated my new tax due. Changing Box 2 and deleting the form did not help.
The fix that finally worked: I went back to an old save point, but this time I entered the form manually and skipped any import. I entered $0 in Box 2 and no issues.
This wasted so much time - over an hour. I am providing this feedback so that the issues above can be fixed.
