Electronic tax return rejected; what happens to scheduled electronic payment?

My electronic tax return filing was rejected; however, I have an electronic payment scheduled for three days from now. If I can't fix the electronic filing of the tax return before then, what happens to the scheduled electronic payment?

Electronic tax return rejected; what happens to scheduled electronic payment?

As long as your payment was scheduled within the filing process in the software?

Then

When a rejection occurs, the DDebit payment doesn't get implemented....the filing process never gets that far in the debit/payment process.

Best to change it before you fix &  e-file again anyhow...change to at least a week out..

_______________

(At least for D.Debit payments from bank accounts)

Thanks very much. Appreciate the information.

Nothing happens.  If your e-file was rejected then nothing about your scheduled payment was transmitted either.  So you need to fix the rejected e-file and try to file it again, or file it by mail if you cannot e-file it successfully.   You might want to make a change for the payment date before trying to file again.  Or pay directly on the IRS site.

You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.

Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed.  Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.

What is the rejection code or rejection message?

If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2022 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late.   Try using zero instead.

If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.
