Efiling Tax Returns

I efiled my federal tax return before I finished my state income tax return (NC).  I later finished my state tax return and then went to efiling. I don't know if there was some box to check I didn't see, but it acknowledged that my federal return had already be efiled and was accepted by the IRS. I had to sign into Intuit and pay $25 to efile the state tax return (I had already used my one free state return for a family member) and then clicked to transmit the state return. Now it says they AGAIN efiled my federal return. I have no idea if this messes me up with the IRS or if they will just ignore or reject the second federal return transmitted. And I don't know what I did for Turbo Tax to send it in again when it clearly said it was filed and accepted on the efile page. I wasn't worried about TT doing it TWICE

Efiling Tax Returns

You are posting from the ONLINE program but are describing the DOWNLOADED program's $25 per state return efiling fee.  The state program was included in the downloaded price but there is a fee for each and every state efiling.   You can print, ink sign and mail in the state return for free if you want.  In the FILE tab simply choose to mail in the state and the PDF file with the mailing instructions will be presented.

Efiling Tax Returns

It's not clear what your question is. You didn't actually ask a question. But you can be sure that TurboTax did not file your federal tax return twice. The message that it displayed might not have been clear, or you might have misunderstood it. If they did try to file your federal return again, it would be rejected. In any case, there is no confusion with the IRS, so don't worry about it.

Make sure that your state return has been successfully filed. You should get two emails, one saying that it was transmitted, and the second saying that it was accepted. Or you can check the e-file status. Some states are slow processing e-filed tax returns. It can take a few days for it to be accepted.

Efiling Tax Returns

My only question was how to prevent Turbo Tax from efiling my federal return twice when doing my state return at a later date.  Yes, TT did efile it twice, at least they say they did.  I totally understand the charges and how to mail in my state return.  I was just surprised at the efiling expense after puchasing the software.  Next year I will probably just mail it in and skip the cost and confusion.
