Efile rejected due to other taxpayer filing separate return and claiming themself when they should have marked box of being dependent of another. That taxpayer has now filed superseded/amended return to correct their original filing. Can rejected return now be resubmitted for efile?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Unfortunately no. You will need to file a paper return because there is no way to get around the e-file system once your dependent has already filed and claimed themselves. Paper file your return with your dependent included.
This article will give instruction on how to print and mail your return.
Thank you. The notification I received from TurboTax did say it could be resubmitted by obtaining an IRS PIN. Here is what it said:
”To electronically file with this duplicate condition, an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) will be required. If you wish to get an IP PIN and you don't already have an account on IRS.gov, then you must register to validate your identity”
Oh, that must be new. I've never seen that before. You can get an Identity Protection pin here. It would need to be for the dependent since they are what is causing the reject.
I would almost think you'd be better off to file by mail. This would be a good option if you filed and it said someone else had already filed - like in a situation of identity theft. I would wonder if you filing with the IP Pin number would put a fraud indicator on the dependent.
As an alternative, you could remove the dependent, file your return, and then file an amendment adding the dependent.
Thank you for your suggestions. I went ahead resubmitted with a PIN for the taxpayer whose return was rejected, and this time it was accepted. Hoping there are no further issues.
My son submitted a 1040-x today to fix the issue. When I went to resubmitted my return, it got rejected for the same reason. His return was accepted with the amend. Do I need to wait longer to refile or am I required to mail in?
@jenkel51101 The amended return will not clear the issue with the IRS rejecting your tax return. Since the IRS has already received a tax return with his Social Security number, that is coded in their database. The IRS database will not be changed by his amended return for this. You will have to print and mail your tax return and claim him as your dependent. The IRS will pay the refund, if any, based on his being a dependent.

I chose Mail My Return and went through all the steps and it still e-filed and it rejected again. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
@jenkel51101 Which TurboTax program are you using?
The TurboTax online web-based editions? Or the TurboTax desktop editions with the software installed on a personal computer?
Web Based
