Can I file for 2022 online turbo tax in Dec 2023 ? Or do I need to purchase the 2022 desktop version ? I am thinking I don't need to buy the 2022 desktop version bc it is still within the year 2023.
My taxes are very simple, so I don't have a lot to report.

Easy answer. No.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2020, 2021, and 2022 is permanently closed.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2020, 2021, or 2022 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
Neither the online version or the desktop version of TurboTax can e-file a 2022 return at this point. TT Online is only available for the current (2023) year, so if you wanted to use Turbotax to prepare a 2022 return, you will need to buy a copy to install on your desktop, and then file by mail. (Note that Amazon, Staples, and other retailers may sell boxed copies of Turbotax for 2022 for less than list price.)
Some professional (paid) preparers may be able to e-file 2022 returns, because the IRS gives them more access than allowed for self-prepared (software assisted) tax returns, but that would probably be more expensive than buying the desktop program.
Right now IRS e-filing is completely shut down while they get ready for 2023 tax returns. Nobody can e-file a tax return right now, not even tax professionals. The IRS will reopen e-filing sometime in January. They have not yet announced a date. When it reopens, tax professionals will be able to e-file a 2022 tax return, but you still will not be able to e-file for 2022 with TurboTax. You will have to print your 2022 tax return and file it by mail. You can do that now, with the CD/Download ("desktop") TurboTax software that you install on your computer.
Thank you everyone for your responses, very helpful. Have a wonderful Holiday season.
