E-Filing was rejected - now I cannot update State filing to mail due to payment method

For some reason my E-Filing of the Federal and State taxes was rejected (even though the data requested from my 2020 return matched exactly). Apparently this can happen). I had already set up payments (I owe taxes for both) by direct debit.

In order to change filing to mail, I was asked to update the payment method. I was able to do this for the Federal. However, it won't permit me to do this for State. It keeps saying payment by check isn't an option.

So I'm stuck - Virginia won't let me submit by mail. It is saying that I need to E-File Federal first, but that option has already been rejected.

Any ideas?

If your federal return is being filed by mail, the state must be filed the same way. State return can only be e-filed if the federal return was.

You can follow the instructions here to correct the rejected federal return, to allow you to e-file state.
