Dual Status Filing - Canada & U.S.

Hi! I was in Canada & tax resident of Canada for the first 5 months of the past year, then in the US on a visitor Visa for the next 3 months, and on a TN visa and in the U.S. for the remainder of the year until now. My understanding is that I have two options.

1) I can file as a Canadian tax resident until the date I meet the presence test, which would be sometime at the end of November, and as a U.S. tax resident for the remaining month or so.

2) I can be considered a U.S. tax resident for the whole year if I choose to do so but I wouldn't want that since I merged & closed a few accounts before getting my TN visa primarily because I read online that all foreign accounts need to be reported in the U.S. and TFSA accounts are particularly complicated to report.

My questions are: first, is my understanding of my options correct, and second, can I do any part of this filing with TurboTax software myself?

Yes, your understanding is correct.

Yes, you can do any part that has to do with filing the US Resident return Form 1040 with TurboTax.  If you choose option 1, then you would need to file both a 1040 and 1040NR.  TurboTax does not support the form 1040NR but our partner Sprintax.com does.
