You can only use the CD/download on a full PC or Mac---not on any sort of mobile device. If you are using a tablet you can only use the online version of TurboTax.
If you have been using the CD/download for past tax returns, you might not like the online software. You need to be aware of the differences. The pricing is structured differently. You pay separate fees for federal and state, for one. With desktop software you get the software for one state included with most versions unless you purchase Basic or Deluxe without a state program.
And with online you get ONE return per fee, whereas with the CD/download you can prepare multiple returns and e-file up to five federal returns. Each return in online needs its own account and user ID.
With the CD/download, every version has all the forms and schedules; you can upgrade if you want more help, but you are not required to upgrade for certain data. With online, you will "have" to upgrade to a more expensive version in order to enter certain types of income like investment income or self-employment income.
No, the TurboTax Android app does not support all the features of the PC software. The mobile app is just an interface to TurboTax Online. TurboTax Online lacks many of the features that are in the CD/Download software. The biggest difference is that TurboTax Online does not have forms mode. There is no way to see the actual tax forms except by creating a PDF of the return, and there is no way to make entries directly on the forms. All entries have to be made in the question-and-answer interview. The lack of the forms mode also means that certain other features are not available, such as Data Source and QuickZoom to trace the data flow and see how numbers in the return were calculated. And there is no way to view or print a form that is not required for your tax return.
xmasbaby0, above, has described other differences between TurboTax Online and the PC software.
Thank you for your quick responses. they answered my question in great detail. The android app is different than the full pc app in the following ways.
a) android is an interface into the online version
b) pricing structure is different
c) features are different, specifically the forms view.
I will retain the pc another year. Although most of my personal work can be done on a tablet, this is one task still better suited for a laptop.
