Document has wrong tax year or some other ... (file won't open)
I see from the knowledge base that this same problem has come up over many years, in other editions, and the resolution seems hit or miss.
I'm using Premier on Mac and get the error message on a "name 24.tax2024" tax file. The document won't open. It last opened successfully on April 11, 2025. The only change: when I tried today, the app applied updates first.
Interestingly, even if I try to start a new return and import last year's fie ("name 23.tax2023") it fails to import last year's (with the same message).
(BTW, I'm doing this because I had to file an extension in April, and now I want to complete my forms for final filing.)
I called support, and a very helpful guy named Ricky spent over an hour with me: we completely uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and every other item he could imagine. No success.
Finally, he transferred me to someone "more knowledgeable" - Autumn. Who was confused about my problem (she thought I'd deleted my tax files and wanted them restored from the cloud, nope). Then when I described the files as "dot tax2024" she said, no, there's a 3-letter name after the dot. I told her on Mac's the names are dot tax2024 -- and my 2023 return was dot tax2023, and 2021 return was dot tax2021, etc.... She argued a bit. I asked her if she is knowledgeable about the Mac version and she told me she has a degree in computing. Okay then.
Autumn then said since I'd managed to corrupt my files, there's nothing she can do. Seems odd that I'd have corrupted both my 2023 tax file (can't import from) and my 2024 file. But apparently it was my error. She said she doesn't know what I did to these files but obviously I did something bad. I asked if it is possible that I did not corrupt any files and there's simply a bug in the app's updates since April 2025... Autumn said since I'm the only one reporting this problem is is my fault and not a TurboTax bug. Seems odd that this has shown up in the knowledge base many times over several years - maybe all those people corrupted their files too, even the ones lucky enough to get the files to eventually open.
Well Ricky made a great impression, and Autumn - well, for 2025 it will be H&R Block or TaxAct or literally anything that isn't Intuit Turbotax, because she reflected so poorly on the business.
Meanwhile, if anyone has ideas (other than Autumn's suggestion I just key everything back in), please let me know!

I’m not a Mac user so this may be off base but isn’t there a Time Machine function that restores everything to a prior date (like before the update)?
Please see how do I find my tax data file (.tax file) in Mac for some steps to assist you.
There is also a possible solution provided by a customer in this thread that you can try if the first link does not assist. Essentially, look for a file named "unsaved TurboTax document" to locate your .tax file.
