Do I have to pay the 3rd stimulus payment of $1400 back that I received March 2021? (Tax Year 2021)

Are there certain qualifications when someone would or wouldn't have to pay this back?I called the IRS and they said that the 3rd payment was essentially an "advance to stimulate the economy” and that I would have to repay the $1,400. I am just questioning this because I did not have to repay the 1st or 2nd stimulus payments. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No, there is no known reason on why you would have to repay the stimulus payment if you reported all your information correctly. If you reported all the information correctly, you would not have to repay the stimulus payment. Additionally, the stimulus payment is not considered taxable income and you would not be paying tax on it either.

If you are a US citizen or a US resident alien with a valid Social Security number you do not pay back the $1,400 3rd stimulus payment you received.  Only if you were a nonresident alien in 2021 and received the stimulus payment would you have to pay it back.

IRS website for the 3rd stimulus payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-round-economic-impact-payment-top...

A person who’s a qualifying resident alien with a valid Social Security number was eligible for the payment only if he or she is a qualifying resident alien in 2021 and not claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer. A nonresident alien in 2021 wasn’t eligible for the payment. An alien who received a payment but was not a qualifying resident alien for 2021 should return the payment to the IRS by following the instructions as described in Returning the Economic Impact Payment for instructions.
