Do I have to mail in my 1040 because I filed with a 1099-G?

Near the end of my simple filing, the site said that I needed to mail in my 1040 to file. The reason given was because I withheld federal tax through the PUA benefits I've received.

Is this required?

Also, do I mail the 1040 with my 1099-G?

Thank you for your time.

When you print the return to be mailed, the first page is a cover sheet with the directions for what to include with the return and the address to mail it to.  The 1099-G will be on that list of documents to include with the return.

When you mail a return it is very important to sign the return before mailing it.  If it is mailed without a signature, it can be returned for you to sign it.

Thank you for the reply and information!

But that doesn't answer my main question. Do I have to mail in my 1040? Or more specifically, why do I have to mail it in?

I'm curious because I'm unsure if I filled in the forms correctly. And on the instruction sheet it says I can electronically file, but the system would not allow that.

TurboTax has been update to allow e-filing with new $10,200 unemployment benefit exclusion from the American Rescue Plan Act. I would suggest deleting the 1099-G information and re-entering.   After you have logged in and are in your return in TurboTax Online:

  • Go to Search at the top of the screen.
  • Enter Form 1099-G in the search box.
  • You will see a Jump To function that will take you to the 1099-G input screens.
  • Delete the 1099-G in question by clicking on the trash can next to the form
  • Then add a new 1099-G.

This update was completed 3/25.  If you e-filed your return with unemployment benefits prior to that date and your return was accepted, the IRS is not processing those refunds until they get the programming updated so they wont have to deal with thousands of amended returns.

Thank you very much for the reply!

At the moment, it seems like I can't alter my 2020 tax returns. I go through the portal but there's no way to change anything. I don't remember hitting a "File" or "Submit" button, just a "print" button. So I'm unsure if Turbotax already sent off my information.

When I try to alter my tax return, the system says I can't due to Turbotax waiting for the IRS to update their system.

So what can I do? I'm afraid I made a mistake, but that might be accepted by the IRS. Would I even know if the IRS accept it?

Are you using the Desktop Software or the Online software? The Online Software is updated and you can go back in and e-file. The Desktop Software may need to be updated. Please see this TurboTax FAQ to update your desktop Software, How do I update my TurboTax CD/Download software p...

Do I have to mail in my 1040 because I filed with a 1099-G?

Hi your instructions do not work:  I am using a desktop version of Home and Business, went to the 1099G questions, but it states to answer NO if your 1099G is for unemployment, federal and state tax was withheld, it is April 12th, I have updated my program TWICE today and still there is no jump to, there is no way to enter the unemployment which is under the 10,200.00, but I need to claim the tax that was paid since the unemployment is tax-free.

This is beyond frustrating, I tried to call TT, that is a joke, I spoke to their "AI" which turned around and e-mailed me a link to these pages.

I actually dug deep and found with a LOT of clicking a way into the forms manually, did override entered the unemployment and the taxes paid in - only to get an error at the end saying there is a problem in overriding.

I just do not understand how my program is not getting this update - it tells me I am up to date.

You can enter your taxes that were withheld without overriding the system.

Under Personal Income

  1. Select Unemployment
  2. Edit your existing 1099-g
  3. Continue past  Enter your 1099-g Info
  4. Below the state entry click the box for  Federal or state taxes were withheld on this payment.
  5. You can now enter your withholding.
