I retired from work in March 2021 and received SS benefits the rest of the year. How do I know if I need to file?

Whether you need to file, depends on your income for the year. If your income is less than the following amounts, you are not required to file a tax return.

Single or Married Filing Separately, under 65  - $12,550

Single or Married Filing Separately,, over 65  - $13,900

    Married Filing Jointly, under 65  - .$25,100

    Married Filing Jointly, over 65  - .$26,800

You may want to file a return, even if you are not required to file. If box 2 of your W2 has a number greater than 0, it is possible you will get a refund.
